Acer Travelmate 2480-2153

Let's make this simple: If you're not a poor college student, look elsewhere for a notebook.

The Acer Travelmate 2480-2153 notebook is smaller than most laptops we've reviewed in this price range. You're going ot be dealing with a 14.1 inch widescreen operating in 1280 x 800 resolution. While that might not be to big of an issue for the portable crowd, the Travelmate is still in the midsized notebook category. But the step down feeling that this laptop provides you, without offering a similar drop in price, doesn't end there.

The input/output and media options don't really sway opinion in either way. The Travelmate has 3 USB, Ethernet, Modem, VGA, S-Video, Headphone, and Microphone. It does have a dual layer dvd burner, but that has really become the standard for dvd burners recently. The built in 802.11 b/g wireless card operates fairly well, but again, nothing special.

The fact this system is running on a 1.6 GHz Celeron M Processor and only 512mb of ram puts the final nail in the coffin on this system. Core 2 Duo has been around long enough that it's just insulting to still find Pentium M's still kicking around. Acer apparently neglected to read the basic requirements for Vista before installing it on their systems. It takes 1 GB of ram for Vista to function correctly and 2 GB if you'd like to actually use your system. Look at any of the other reviews that address systems at this price range and you'll question Acer's decision to even put money into developing this system for sale. Put this one in your laugh bank and move on.
