Dell XPS M1730 Review

Whenever a new gaming laptop comes out many default into the mindset that notebooks can't possibly handle the new games that have come out. While that may be true for the game Crysis, the Dell XPS M1730 packs dual DirectX 10 compatible 256mb GeForce GO 8700M GT in an SLI configuration. If that's not enough for you on a graphics end, the 1920 x 1200 pixel WUXGA display and an Ageia's PhysX controller further increasing the display quality and performance it can provide you in any gaming experience for quite some time.
Although graphics are important, you need the processing power to back it up, so they have equipped the M1730 with an Intel 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme X7900 processor. This specific processor is very easy and safe to over clock up to 3.4 GHz, which is quite a nice boost in performance. In the multimedia department it looks like the standard XPS theme has been replicated, which includes: 2 MP webcam located above the screen; media control panel on the front bezel including the Media Direct button; four USB ports; One DVI, S-Video out, and FireWire ports; Dual headphone and microphone ports; and a five-in-one card reader. All of these are on top or on the side of the full sized G15 keyboard with built in gaming LCD and backlit keys. The most interesting feature in that list is the Media Direct button which negatives loading Windows and simply provides access to your media.
If you’re looking for a gaming notebook right now, then this might the one for you. But consider that for almost $4,000 you're not getting a Blu-ray drive, enhanced speakers and subwoofer, or an HDMI output. And with DirectX 10.1 cards right around the corner, you may find that the graphics setup in this 11 pound beast may not cut it for the games to come.
