Toshiba Portege R500 Review

The vast differences between types of notebooks can be almost startling. Take the difference in size and weight that most have to offer. While larger widescreen LCD displays and full multimedia features may appeal to some, the 2.4 pounds of portable love that the Protégé R500 provides will allow you to forget about your last 12 pound notebook. The R500 may not be the thinnest notebook, especially in comparison to the Macbook Air, but Toshiba prides themselves at compromising as little as possible in their ultraportable systems and keeping your system safe from coffee spills.
Keeping you focused on its 12.1 inch backlit transflective LED screen won't be difficult as its brightness and size for its weight is relatively top notch. You’re not going to be utilizing its screen built in speaker for much more than basic application in quiet areas, but it will provide you with what you need on the go. Under the monitor you'll find a full sized keyboard with auxiliary keys and a fairly large touchpad for such a small device that includes both vertical and horizontal scrolling. Sporting a FireWire, Ethernet, VGA, Headphone, Microphone, and three USB ports, you shouldn't have any problem connecting to this device. And with a DVD SuperMulti drive, PC card slot, and SD Card reader, few forms of media will pass you by on your mobile journeys.
Under the hood you can customize the R500 up to 2 GB ram and a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo U7600 processor. While they opted to provide you 802.11a/g/n wireless through their PC card slot, they did pop in onboard Bluetooth 2.0. But at such a small size, Toshiba assumed that you’re worried about security and even included a fingerprint reader to assure you that your data is safe.
The Ultraportable style of notebooks is catching on fast, leaving little room for systems that can't cut it. The Toshiba Protégé R500 has proven its worth, security, and resistance to the girl on the train who spilled her coffee on it. This is definitely near the top of the ultraportable line, especially at around $2,000.
