Modding, silent computer.

Monday, July 9, 2007

Before I moving to a new flat, computer noise was never a problem for me. I was satisfied with the noise levels granted by ordinary off the shelf cooling systems. But when the unlimited Internet channel appeared, I stopped modding my computer off at nights. And the “computer noise problem” instantly became unbearable. This is how I came to the Idea of relieving my electronic friend of the main noise source: unreliable and dust sucking fans. All the well-known methods were tried before the present design appeared. I was actually satisfied with liquid cooling - all but its reliability. The system was removed after the very first leak and is now used only for my overclocking experiments. Finally I realized that heatpipes were the only reasonable option for me.

My inspiration came from the projects of a known modding fan mr.Numano and the Zalman's fanless joke TNN500AF(1100USD, I’m shoked..) However a purchase of a 1100USD toy hadn't quite matched my plans so I decided to fabricate a silent, fanless heapipe-based computer myself. With a small group of enthusiasts we proceeded to business and despite all hardships the idea was sucsessfully materialized. All the computers that were built using this technology half a year ago still work flawlessly having lived through hot summer days.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t foresee the result, that’s why we have no step-by-step photo session of the modding process. Almost all the pictures had been taken during the final assembling of the computers…

The growth of computers’ productivity is always held with the increasing of coolers power. Some don’t like noise from coolers in modern computers. We practically solved this problem. In our computers there are no coolers even hard disk drives are in special silent pc box with cooling. The device reliability is much higher then usual computers, now it’s not afraid of dust and the work of an expensive processor doesn’t depend from a cheap cooler. We don’t use water for cooling process, such systems are less reliable. We use only heat pipes and passive cooling. The results we achieved exceeded expectations, the device has been working for half a year and it worked during the summer time.

This project is for all, EVERYONE can make a computer with passive cooling, even if you live far from civilization, you just need to have a strong wish to make it. It was very hard to make a project for all. But practically all technical questions are solved, almost all. We don’t sell such computers this project is for handy people. You see, it’s very easy and you can make silent computer alone at home.

I wish everyone good modding!
